機器視覺(jué)和圖像處理方面的研究工作,最重要的兩個(gè)問(wèn)題:其一是要把握住國際上最前沿的內容;其二是所作工作要具備很高的實(shí)用背景。解決第一個(gè)問(wèn)題的辦法就是找出這個(gè)方向公認最高成就的幾個(gè)超級專(zhuān)家(看看他們都在作什么)和最權威的出版物(閱讀上面最新的文獻),解決第二個(gè)問(wèn)題的辦法是你最好能夠找到一個(gè)實(shí)際應用的項目,邊做邊寫(xiě)文章。 做好這幾點(diǎn)的途徑之一就是利用網(wǎng)絡(luò )資源,利用權威網(wǎng)站和專(zhuān)家們的個(gè)人主頁(yè)。

1. 國際會(huì )議
現在,國際上計算機視覺(jué)方面的三大國際會(huì )議是ICCV, CVPR和ECCV,統稱(chēng)之為ICE。
ICCV的全稱(chēng)是International Comference on Computer Vision。ICCV兩年一次,與ECCV正好錯開(kāi),是公認的三個(gè)會(huì )議中級別最高的。

ECCV的全稱(chēng)是Europeon Conference on Computer Vision,是一個(gè)歐洲的會(huì )議。

CVPR的全稱(chēng)是Internaltional Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recogintion國際計算機視覺(jué)與模式識別會(huì )議。這是一個(gè)一年一次的會(huì )議,舉辦地在美國。

眾所周知, computer vision(cv) 存在ICCV/CVPR/ECCV三個(gè)頂級會(huì )議,它們檔次差不多,都應該在一流會(huì )議行列, 沒(méi)有必要給個(gè)高下。有些us的人認為ICCV/CVPR略好于ECCV,而歐洲人大都認為ICCV/ECCV略好于CVPR,某些英國的人甚至認為BMVC好于CVPR。簡(jiǎn)言之, 三個(gè)會(huì )議差不多, 各有側重和偏好。

筆者就個(gè)人經(jīng)驗淺談三會(huì )異同, 以供大家參考和討論。 三者乃cv領(lǐng)域的旗艦和風(fēng)向標,其oral paper (包括best paper) 代表當年度cv的最高水準, 在此引用Harry Shum的一句話(huà), 想知道某個(gè)領(lǐng)域在做些什么,找最近幾年此領(lǐng)域的proceeding看看就知道了。 ICCV/CVPR由IEEE Computer Society牽頭組織, ECCV好像沒(méi)有專(zhuān)門(mén)負責的組織。 CVPR每年(除2002年)都在美國開(kāi), ECCV每?jì)赡觊_(kāi)一次,僅限歐洲, ICCV也是每?jì)赡暌淮,各洲輪值?基本可以保證每年有兩個(gè)會(huì )議開(kāi), 這樣研究者就有兩次躋身牛會(huì )的機會(huì )。
就錄取率而言, 三會(huì )都有波動(dòng)。 如ICCV2001錄取率>30%,且出現兩個(gè)人(華人)各有三篇第一作者的paper的情況, 這在頂級牛會(huì )是不常見(jiàn)的 (灌水嫌疑)。 但是, ICCV2003, 2005兩次錄取率都很低, 大約20%左右。 ECCV也是類(lèi)似規律, 在2004年以前都是>30%, 2006年降低到20%左右。 CVPR的錄取率近年來(lái)一直偏高,從2004年開(kāi)始一直都在[25%,30%]。最近一次CVPR2006是28.1%, CVPR2007還不知道統計數據。筆者猜測為了維持錄取paper的絕對數量, 當submission少的時(shí)候錄取率偏高, 反之偏低,近幾年三大會(huì )議的投稿數量全部超過(guò)1000, 相對2000年前, 三會(huì )錄取率均大幅度降低,最大幅度50%->20%。 對錄取率走勢感興趣的朋友, 可參考 http://vrlab.epfl.ch/~ulicny/statistics/(CVPR2004的數據是錯的),http://www.adaptivebox.net/research/bookmark/CICON_stat.html.

顯然, 投入cv的人越來(lái)越多,這個(gè)領(lǐng)域也是越來(lái)越大, 這點(diǎn)頗不似machine learning一直奉行愚蠢的小圈子主義。另外一點(diǎn)值得注意, ICCV/ECCV只收vision相關(guān)的topic,而cvpr會(huì )收少量的pattern recognition paper, 如finger print等,但是不收和image/video完全不占邊的pr paper,如speech recognition等。我一個(gè)朋友曾經(jīng)review過(guò)一篇投往CVPR的speech的paper, 三個(gè)reviewer一致拒絕,其中一個(gè)reviewer搞笑的指出, 你這篇paper應該是投ICASSP被據而轉投CVPR的。 就topic而言, CVPR涵蓋最廣。 還有一個(gè)沒(méi)有驗證過(guò)的原因導致CVPR錄取率高: 很多us的researcher不愿意或沒(méi)有足夠的經(jīng)費到us以外的地方開(kāi)會(huì ), 故CVPR會(huì )優(yōu)先接收很多來(lái)自us的paper (讓大家都happy)。

以上對三會(huì )的分析對我們投paper是很有指導作用的。 目前的research我想絕大部分還是紙上談兵, 必經(jīng) read paper -> write paper -> publish paper -> publish paper on top conferences and journals流程。故了解投paper的一些基本技巧, 掌握領(lǐng)域的走向和熱點(diǎn), 是非常必要的。 避免做無(wú)用功,選擇切合的topic,改善presentation, 注意格式 (遵守規定的模板), 我想這是很多新手需要注意的問(wèn)題。如ICCV2007明文規定不寫(xiě)summary page直接reject, 但是仍然有人忽視, 這是相當不值得的。
